Citizen Petition to Re-Classify Oil and Gas Waste as Hazardous

Oil and gas wastes (E&P wastes) are hazardous by all definitions except legal. E&P waste is hazardous due to its toxicity, corrosivity, and ignitability – releasing it into the environment can cause substantial harm. Yet, state regulations disregard public health and the environment to allow this waste to be sprayed on roads and injected into Class II wells. The practice of high volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is generating billions of gallons of hazardous waste that are improperly disposed of due to insufficient health and safety regulations. Some of these wastes have high levels of radioactivity, carcinogens, endocrine disruptors and heavy metals. Sign on to our petition to regulate E&P wastes as hazardous waste under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation Recovery Act and help protect Ohio.
